Unity

The image on the right exemplifies how unity in a design can be achieved with the repetition of a shape throughtout the composition, a color betwen foreground and background and the use of negative space.

I chose the design on the left as an example of unity through repetition with emphasis on variety. The use of round shapes create a relationship between the cake, glass vases, beads, macaroons, as well as round display trays. The monochromatic scheme also reinforces the harmony in the composition.

The Picasso piece on the right shows unity by continuity. The line of the lady's shoulder directs the viewer's eyes toward the hair line, then down to the hair over arm continuing to the pattern shown in the background all the way to legs at the bottom.

Romero Britto somehow makes all these conflicting elements, colors, textures and shapes work together. I enjoy his art, but it definately requires a minimal background for
the piece to shine and not overwhelm.
